Does the definition of mentor require that the mentor knows they are a mentor to the mentee? I am not sure if the generally accepted definition of “mentor” requires that you know the person and that they know that they are your mentor, but for the purpose of this essay, I am going to stipulate that they don’t have to.I have had incredibly positive and encouraging mentors in my life for which I am grateful every day. They might include for example, Don Sutton, Henry Powers, George S. Patton, Jack Aubrey, Tom Feeley, Brooks Whitehouse, Richard Kimball, Steve Watson, Dan Sullivan, Marty Seligman, Chris Bouzaid, Jack Darrell, Naval Ravikant, and many others. But professionally—supremely, for over forty years—it has been Danny Kahneman.

EOM:“Whaddya meanthe Private Equity Group (PEG) wants us to reduce the Enterprise Value we already agreed to?!? Iknewthey’d pull something like this! We’ve already discussed all the financial terms of their offer, and we’ve signed a Letter of Intent that reflects that value.”Bigelow:“Well, they’ve got a different perspective now that they’ve been able to do some investigation.”EOM:“Okay, let’s discuss it. Is there anything that was raised in the Due Diligence investigation that wasn’t accurate or was different than we represented, or was a surprise disappointment in performance that they didn’t know about?”

On the Positive Enterprise Value podcast, I interview some of the most high-performing successful EOMs from both the for profit, and the not-for-profit domains. On this episode I interviewed Kyle Reagan, Chairman and CEO of DECCO, Inc., a mechanical contractor that specializes in the most complex capital projects for the pharmaceutical industry. Kyle came from a working-class background. He was a great high school baseball player and in fact got drafted. He played for both the Cincinnati Reds and the Atlanta Braves as a catcher. When he transitioned out of the professional baseball world, he realized that he really wanted to work with people in an environment where he could help them unlock their potential, particularly people who didn't have much. Thus, he began work at DECCO as a Project Engineer. Kyle worked his way up to become part of the leadership team helping the business grow and transform from basically being a company that provided complex mechanical piping and electrical solutions for semiconductor manufacturers to one where, under Kyle’s guidance, pivoted towards pharmaceutical manufacturers, all the while staying true to his lifelong focus of unlocking the potential in others. Kyle's work with DECCO has recently culminated in its acquisition by Comfort Systems, a strategic public investor where DECCO is now a wholly owned subsidiary. I had the fun of interviewing Kyle in his offices in January 2024.I hope you gain some learning from it and enjoy it just as much I did.
