In an interview on 60 Minutes last night, Google CEO Sundar Pichai hinted that “society isn’t prepared for the rapid advancement of AI”, and warned of consequences, saying that AI will impact “every product of every company.”So what is AI?According to the Google Cloud website, “Artificial intelligence (AI) is a set of technologies that enable computers to perform a variety of advanced functions, including the ability to see, understand and translate spoken & written language, analyze data, and make recommendations.”It went onto describe AI as the “backbone of innovation in modern computing, unlocking value for individuals and businesses.”During his 60 Minutes interview, Pichai also warned that “society needs to prepare for such technologies”, and that the “human-like capabilities” of AI products such as Google’s chatbot Bard are a bit “unsettling”.“We need to adapt as a society for it” Pichai said, who asserted that jobs being disrupted by AI include “knowledge workers,” such as accountants, architects, writers - and even software developers.While AI has the potential to innovate, and accelerate societal advancement, it also has the potential to cause harm, with Pichai warning of AI’s consequences - such as “the scale of the problem of disinformation and fake news & images being much bigger” due to AI, which “could cause real harm.”Needless to say, to hear the CEO of Google sharing such concerns is a bit frightening.That said, it’s my hope as someone who has spent nearly his entire career in tech that AI will be used to overcome society’s largest challenges and solve big problems, but the onus will be on us (the people who put AI to work) to ensure that AI is used to make the world a better place, instead of for harm.
