A Framework (SOCRATex) for Hierarchical Annotation of Unstructured Electronic Health Records and Integration Into a Standardized Medical Database: Development and Usability Study

Eugene Jeong

Background Although electronic health records (EHRs) have been widely used in secondary assessments, clinical documents are relatively less utilized owing to the lack of standardized clinical text frameworks across different institutions. Objective This study aimed to develop a framework for processing unstructured clinical documents of EHRs and integration with standardized structured data. Methods We developed a framework known as Staged Optimization of Curation, Regularization, and Annotation of clinical text (SOCRATex). SOCRATex has the following four aspects: (1) extracting clinical notes for the target population and preprocessing the data, (2) defining the annotation schema with a hierarchical structure, (3) performing document-level hierarchical annotation using the annotation schema, and (4) indexing annotations for a search engine system. To test the usability of the proposed framework, proof-of-concept studies were performed on EHRs. We defined three distinctive patient g...

Defining the infrastructure for a national item bank service

2005 •

Mhairi McAlpine

Item banks (sometimes known as question banks) have been around for many years but are not yet widely used in the UK. There are clear benefits such as economies of scale when items are built across a subject area or sector. When this is coordinated centrally items are more likely to be peer reviewed, validated properly and to adhere to technical, interoperability and accessibility standards. Quality can be enhanced by delivering the items to larger numbers of candidates, leading to improvements following analysis of item usage data. However there is currently no satisfactory way for these to be stored and made available to potential users; the available commercial learning object repositories are unable to deal with assessment content adequately. In an attempt to solve such issues and to begin to define the infrastructure of a distributed national item bank service, the Item Bank Infrastructure Study (IBIS) brought together individuals and institutions in the UK with key expertise i...

Alcohol Detection with Vehicle Warning

2020 •

Ali Almaktoof

It takes being alive and healthy to tackle challenges for sustainable development. The source of drinking and driving has led to the loss of life and property. Control measures to ensure drivers are not under influence of alcohol while driving such as Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) check remains unrealizable due to used personnel, equipment, and maintenance cost involved. A less consuming effort has been proposed using MQ3 gas sensor mounted on the steering wheel, powered by the ignition of the vehicle to detect alcohol processed by Arduino Uno. In this project, an Arduino Uno compares the output with a set threshold for compliance. If the threshold is exceeded four modules are simultaneously triggered. Fuel supply control module is activated by a relay to cut-off engine and bring the vehicle to stationary position. The Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) module display is activated to show alcohol has been detected. The Global Positioning System (GPS) module is activated to detect exact loca...
